A groundbreaking hybrid electricity interconnector, named LionLink, is set to connect the UK and the Netherlands, marking a significant milestone in renewable energy collaboration.
This innovative project, a partnership between TenneT and National Grid Ventures (NGV), will serve two crucial purposes:
1️⃣ Harnessing Offshore Wind Energy– LionLink will transmit renewable energy from the Nederwiek 3 wind farm directly to the mainland.
2️⃣ Enhancing Grid Connectivity – It will establish a high-voltage link between the UK and Dutch power grids, boosting electricity trading and grid reliability in both countries.
Marco Kuijpers, Director of Large Projects Offshore at TenneT, highlights its benefits:
“This hybrid interconnector enhances supply security, maximises cable efficiency, and optimises the North Sea’s space. It also fosters competition in the energy market, delivering advantages for both consumers and businesses.”
Set to be operational by 2032, LionLink promises to strengthen energy resilience and accelerate the transition to a sustainable future.
