GLEG UK Energy Market Update…
June 23, 2025Britain is heading into winter with confidence, as the National Electricity System Operator (NESO) projects a sufficient electricity supply to meet seasonal demand.
In its early assessment released this week, NESO highlights that a combination of expanded battery storage, increased gas-fired generation, higher renewable output, and the commissioning of the Greenlink interconnector between Ireland and Wales is boosting grid resilience.
The de-rated margin—a key indicator of spare capacity—is forecast at 6.6 GW, the highest since winter 2019/20 and over 1 GW above last year’s outlook. This projection is based on an anticipated peak electricity demand of 60.5 GW.
While there may be tighter supply windows in early December and mid-January, NESO reassures that market mechanisms are in place, including standby generation notices, to manage any strain on the system.
A comprehensive Winter Outlook report will be published in October, but this early signal is a strong indicator of system preparedness and market stability.
