Next-Generation Geothermal Is Challenging Gas Power in Europe
February 20, 2026The UK has reached a landmark moment in its clean energy transition, securing a record level of solar power in the government’s latest renewable energy auction.
As part of the country’s ambition to largely decarbonise the electricity sector by 2030, significant new Contracts for Difference (CfDs) have been awarded to renewable projects across the UK. These contracts provide long-term price certainty for generators while protecting consumers from fossil fuel volatility.
🔋 Key Highlights from the Latest Auction:
- 6.2GW of onshore wind, solar, and tidal power awarded
- 4.9GW allocated to solar energy alone — a record level
- 14.7GW total capacity secured, enough to power approximately 16 million homes
- 157 solar projects awarded contracts, including EDF’s Cressing Solar Farm and RWE’s Clachaig Glen project
Strike prices were set at:
- £72.24/MWh for onshore wind
- £65.23/MWh for solar
These prices are significantly lower than the cost of building new gas-fired power stations — reinforcing that renewables aren’t just cleaner, but also more cost-effective.
By supporting solar and onshore wind at scale, the government aims to permanently reduce bills and shield families, businesses, and the country from the volatility of fossil fuels.
Through the CfD scheme, if wholesale electricity prices fall below the agreed rate, the government makes up the difference. If prices rise above it, generators pay the surplus back — creating stability for both producers and consumers.
What This Means for UK Businesses
Solar is no longer the future — it’s the present.
With government backing, falling technology costs, and increasing grid pressures, there has never been a better time for businesses to explore solar installation. Locking in your own energy generation can reduce operational costs, protect against rising electricity prices, and strengthen your sustainability credentials.
If you’re considering solar for your business, start by understanding your potential savings.
