🌍 Energy Market Update
July 9, 2025The UK electric vehicle (EV) market continues to make impressive strides, with the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showing a significant increase in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales. In June alone, BEV registrations surged by 39.1% compared to the same period last year.
BEVs now account for nearly a quarter—24.8%—of all new vehicle sales, helping drive an overall market expansion of 6.7% to 191,316 units, marking the best performance since 2019. This robust growth reflects the growing appeal of cleaner, greener transportation among consumers.
While BEV adoption has not yet reached the government’s 28% target for 2025, it is on a strong upward trajectory. For the first half of the year, BEVs captured 21.6% of the market, demonstrating clear momentum toward achieving the UK’s ambitious climate objectives. This trend reflects how both consumers and manufacturers are embracing the transition to sustainable mobility as the 2030 phase-out of new petrol and diesel vehicles approaches.
The expansion of the EV market is also helping catalyse broader investments in infrastructure and renewable energy. As EV adoption rises, so too does demand for a reliable, accessible charging network and greater integration of renewable energy sources. This growing demand supports the development of essential infrastructure, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to sustainability and clean growth.
The automotive and energy sectors are looking ahead with optimism to forthcoming policy updates, including the Statement of Strategic Priorities for GB Energy and the Clean Flexibility Roadmap. These initiatives are expected to provide further clarity and support for the transition to a low-carbon future.
In summary, the accelerating growth of electric vehicle sales not only benefits consumers looking for cleaner, more efficient transportation options but also plays a pivotal role in reducing emissions, improving air quality, and driving forward investment in green technologies. The future of mobility is electric—and it’s gaining speed.
