GLEG UK Energy Market Update…
August 11, 2025The UK government has announced a new incentive to accelerate the transition to clean, green power. Households living near new electricity pylons – essential for connecting renewable energy projects to the grid – could receive up to £250 off their annual bills.
This initiative supports Britain’s ambition to largely decarbonise the electricity sector by 2030, which means rapidly expanding renewable generation and upgrading the national grid. Delivering this future will require twice as much transmission infrastructure in the next seven years as has been built in the last decade.
Energy Consumers Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh highlighted that as we invest in the infrastructure for affordable, homegrown renewable energy, communities should also share in the benefits. Over ten years, eligible households could see savings of up to £2,500, helping to build public support for vital energy connections like pylons and substations.
Alongside this, Ofgem is introducing tougher protections for energy customers, requiring suppliers to deliver faster smart meter installations and timely repairs from 2026.
At GLEG, we welcome policies that enable renewable energy projects to scale at pace while ensuring communities remain at the heart of the clean energy transition. The path to net zero is not only about technology — it’s about partnership, trust, and shared benefit.
