A recent study by the University of Sheffield suggests that the UK could generate more than four times its electricity needs through solar energy—without compromising valuable agricultural land.
By adopting agrivoltaics, a system that integrates solar panels with farming, the research highlights how food production can continue while harnessing solar power. This approach addresses concerns about the loss of farmland, a key issue for farmers and local communities opposing large-scale ground-mounted solar farms.
Addressing Concerns Over Solar Farms
Debates surrounding the expansion of solar energy often centre on rising costs, food security, and the visual impact of installations. However, agrivoltaics offers a solution by positioning solar panels above crops or grazing areas, allowing both energy generation and agriculture to coexist.
Professor Sue Hartley, Vice-President for Research and Innovation at the University of Sheffield, noted that while this dual-use method is widely implemented in other countries, it is still relatively new to the UK.
Ideal Locations for Agrivoltaics
The research identifies regions such as Cambridgeshire, Essex, Lincolnshire, and the broader East and South East of England as prime locations for agrivoltaics. These areas benefit from flat terrain, existing agricultural activity, strong grid connections, and ample sunlight.
Global Success and Sustainability Benefits
The findings build on a £1.4 million research project led by the University of Sheffield, which tested agrivoltaic systems in Tanzania and Kenya. Results showed that crops like maize, Swiss chard, and beans thrived under partial shading from the panels, improving yields and water conservation. Additionally, rainwater collected from the panels reduced irrigation requirements, further enhancing sustainability.
The Need for UK Field Trials
Dr. Richard Randle-Boggis, co-author of the study and now with SINTEF, stressed the need for UK-based field trials to refine system designs and engage local communities.
By demonstrating how solar farms and agriculture can successfully coexist, agrivoltaics could help address public concerns while supporting the UK’s journey towards net-zero emissions.
