GLEG UK Energy Market Update…
February 17, 2025The UK government has introduced the Clean Industry Bonus (CIB), a new funding initiative designed to support offshore wind developers who invest in key regions that need it most.
This programme prioritises traditional oil and gas communities, aiming to create well-paid jobs in sectors such as engineering, electrical work, and welding.
In addition to job creation, the CIB will encourage the construction of low-carbon factories, offshore wind blade production facilities, cable manufacturing sites, and ports, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable industrial supply chain.
Major Investment Potential
The Clean Industry Bonus will provide £27 million per gigawatt of offshore wind projects. Developers committing to between 7GW and 8GW of new capacity could secure up to £200 million in funding.
Government Commitment
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband reaffirmed the government’s commitment to clean energy, stating: “We are supporting our esteemed manufacturing, coastal, and oil and gas communities with quality jobs, skills, and private sector investment—fulfilling the government’s Plan for Change.
“This demonstrates our mission to become a clean energy superpower, promoting growth, ensuring energy security, and transforming towns and cities in the transition—from the ports of Nigg and Leith to the manufacturing centres of Blyth and Hull.”
Application Deadline
The CIB application window closes on April 14, 2025. This initiative presents a significant opportunity for offshore wind developers to contribute to the UK’s net zero goals, drive economic growth, and support the clean energy transition.
