The government has increased the budget for the renewables Contract for Difference (CfD) Allocation Round 6 by £0.53 billion, bringing the total to £1.56 billion.
According to consultancy Cornwall Insight, this increased budget could result in the addition of at least 1.2GW of offshore wind capacity, raising the total to 4.3GW. This expansion would account for approximately 25% of the UK’s current offshore wind capacity. These estimates are based on the assumption of maximum bid prices and sufficient participation in the auction.
However, if competition drives bids lower, the secured capacity could be even greater. In the previous CfD auction, no offshore wind contracts were awarded, although it did secure 1.7GW of onshore wind and 1.9GW of solar PV.
The increased budget and potential for additional offshore wind capacity highlight the government’s commitment to expanding renewable energy infrastructure and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
