Reducing Energy Costs Is Key to Meeting Britain’s Climate Goals

To meet its ambitious climate objectives, Britain must lower electricity prices and accelerate the deployment of emissions-reducing technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pumps. A recent report from the country’s climate advisers emphasises that affordable electricity is essential to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

The UK’s transition to net zero demands widespread electrification of carbon-intensive sectors like heating and transport, which currently depend heavily on fossil fuels. Yet persistently high electricity prices continue to be a barrier to progress.

Although the national energy regulator, Ofgem, has announced a 7% reduction in the energy price cap starting in July, electricity prices remain significantly higher than they were before the 2021 gas price crisis triggered by geopolitical instability.

The Committee on Climate Change, which publishes annual assessments of the government’s climate progress, outlined a clear pathway to meeting the UK’s commitment under the Paris Agreement—a 68% emissions reduction from 1990 levels by 2030. This trajectory remains within reach but requires swift and coordinated action.

The report includes 43 recommendations for achieving climate targets. These include reducing electricity costs for households and businesses, accelerating grid connections for new clean energy projects, mandating the use of low-carbon heating systems in new buildings, and launching a national skills strategy to support the green transition.

Thanks to the expansion of renewable energy and the retirement of coal-fired power plants, Britain has already reduced emissions by approximately 54% since 1990. Maintaining this momentum is critical as the country approaches its next major climate milestones.
