Port of Blyth Announces Major Expansion to Support Offshore Wind Growth

The Port of Blyth has unveiled plans for a major £100 million expansion project aimed at strengthening the UK’s growing offshore wind sector. The proposed Battleship Wharf Expansion is designed to increase the port’s ability to handle larger offshore wind components and support the next phase of renewable energy development across the UK.

The project will see significant upgrades to the port’s infrastructure, including new deep-water access, extended quayside space and additional heavy-duty handling equipment. Around three hectares of land will also be reclaimed as part of the development, helping the port accommodate larger vessels and next-generation offshore technology. The expansion will sit close to the existing JDR cable facility, further reinforcing Blyth’s role within the offshore energy supply chain.

Supporting the UK’s Energy Transition

The announcement follows confirmation from The Crown Estate around new offshore wind seabed leasing opportunities in the North East, highlighting the growing demand for infrastructure capable of supporting future clean energy projects. As offshore wind capacity continues to expand, investment in ports and supply chain infrastructure will play a critical role in helping the UK deliver long-term energy security and net zero ambitions.

Investment, Jobs and Long-Term Growth

The early stages of the project are being funded through a partnership between the Port of Blyth, Northumberland County Council, the North East Combined Authority and The Crown Estate. Alongside supporting offshore wind development, the investment is also expected to drive regional growth, create jobs and strengthen the North East’s position as a key hub in the UK energy market.
