GLEG UK Energy Market Update 19-10-26…
October 19, 2026The UK’s offshore wind industry has reached another significant milestone, with ScottishPower Renewables completing a record-setting cable landfall operation for its 960 MW East Anglia Two offshore wind farm.
The operation involved installing two ducts, each approximately 1.8 kilometres long and 800 millimetres in diameter, beneath the Suffolk coastline and seabed. Using horizontal directional drilling, the team created an underground route for the project’s high-voltage export cables without disturbing the beach above.
ScottishPower Renewables says the operation represents the largest electricity transmission landfall of its type in the UK, based on duct length and diameter. The continuous polyethylene ducts were manufactured by Pipelife in Norway, with OCU Group managing the onshore civil engineering programme.
What happens next?
Located around 33 kilometres off the Suffolk coast at its closest point, East Anglia Two is expected to feature 64 wind turbines and deliver up to 960 MW of renewable electricity generation capacity.
The first export cable is planned for installation in summer 2027, with commercial operations targeted for late 2028.
What does this mean for businesses?
Projects like East Anglia Two demonstrate the scale of infrastructure needed to expand the UK’s renewable energy capacity. However, increased renewable generation does not automatically mean lower electricity prices. Wholesale markets are also influenced by gas prices, weather, demand and network constraints.
At GLEG, we monitor developments across the energy sector to help businesses understand how changes in generation and infrastructure could affect the market, their procurement strategy and future energy costs.
